How We Measure Skylights

Skylights are made to very specific dimensions and it is important to measure them correctly before placing your order.

With so many different terms and standards around the country, it can be hard to know how to measure correctly and what the various parts are.

Curb Mount Skylights

Outside Curb

To get the outside curb measurement, measure the existing finished curb on the structure the skylight will be installed over.

Outside Frame

The outside frame measurement is taken from the length of both sides of the skylight exterior measured from vertical edge to vertical edge.

Self Flashing Skylights

Roof Opening

Self flashing skylights are measured primarily by the roof opening. Measure the interior opening of the base frame, from the underside of the skylight.

Retaining Cap

The retaining cap is the top piece of metal that holds the glazing to the skylight. Measure the retaining cap along each side from outer edge to outer edge.

Inside Frame

The inside frame measurement is taken from the length of both sides of the skylight interior measured from vertical edge to vertical edge. This measurement is taken from the underside of the skylight.
